Meet the (retired) Trustee... Ray Mills

What is your favourite film?

Going back a few years.... "The Quiet Man".

What was your route to Faith?

I was brought up in a church-going family. I accepted Jesus into my life in early 1955. I now go to St Stephen's Church in Chatham which is a friendly, outward looking Christian Fellowship.

Before becoming a Chaplain, what did you do in terms of employment?

Since 1956 I have been part of the Church Army. I was commissioned on 25th July 1958, and since then have worked in England, Ireland and in the shanty towns of Lima , South America as an Evangelist and to undertake Church Planting.

When were you first challenged to take your faith outside the church?

What joys has being a Trustee brought you?

Rubbing shoulders with people dedicated to workplace ministry, hearing stories of how Chaplains were fulfilling their calling and seeing God at work in supplying the needs of the mission.

Go for it! Some have gifts in finance and management which are necessary for any mission to succeed. Not everyone is called to be a Chaplain - albeit we are all called to live and witness for Jesus.

How do you see workplace Chaplaincy changing in the future?

I see workplace Chaplaincy getting more and more involved with local Christian fellowships across the denominations and training the many who go to work outside the home to carry the message with them and quietly witness by their lifestyle, work ethics etc and "be ready to give an answer" when the question is asked.
More use of emails etc.

Anything else you want to add?

One of the things that helped me was the fact that over the years I have done many funerals for St Stephens - and quite often I have turned up in a home to arrange a funeral and found myself face to face with an ASDA employee. As a result we moved on to a different relationship and I becamme a 'friend' as opposed to a 'Chaplain'.
