Be a Volunteer Chaplain

Presently Kent Workplace Mission has about 50 volunteer and associate Chaplains in the workplace, providing Chaplaincy services across a range of workplaces including: Bluewater Shopping Centre, Abbeyfield Care Homes, Littlebrook Powerstation, BAE Rochester, Eurotunnel, Port-of-Dover, Asda Stores, Medway, Gravesham and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Councils.

Do you have an hour or two a week that you could spare to give to good works through KWM?

There are many opportunities across Kent, Bexley and Bromley for you to become involved with Chaplaincy, either by volunteering as a Chaplain for one of our already established Chaplaincies, or (with our support) starting up a Chaplaincy with a business in your local area.

Chaplains are volunteers and can be ordained Ministers, or ordinary church members from a variety of backgrounds and occupations. Chaplains have a great love for people and are able (and willing!) to commit a few hours each week to visiting a local workplace. As a volunteer Chaplain you will have the confidence and ability to engage in conversations, build trusting relationships and listen to people - share in the trivial day to day 'smalls' to the deeply significant 'bigs' of every day life. On occasion you may have to be prepared to stand-by in times of crisis and reflect back to Kent Workplace Mission.

As a Volunteer Chaplain you will not be left to loiter unsupported. If you have any interest in being a listener and a supportive 'ear' for a local business the first step would be to speak to the leaders of your place of worship, and ask them if they would be prepared to support your application to become a volunteer Chaplain. They are the people who know you best, and can see your potential even when you cannot see it for yourself. Your Church are the best people to support you and say, "Yes, you're brilliant with people; yes, you're a great listener - Chaplaincy is a fantastic option for you." Ask your Church to pray for you and with you as you seek God's guidance.

Next, contact us. We can arrange for you to come in to one of our running Chaplaincies for a day, to "loiter with intent" - to have a chat with our current Chaplains and to shadow someone for a couple of hours, to get a feel for what is involved. You might want to try this out in a couple of different locations, as Chaplaincy in a retail park is very different to that in a County Court or a factory. This will help you to get a better understanding of where God wants you to do your Chaplaincy - to join an already established Chaplaincy team, or to provide Chaplaincy opportunities for a local business that does not already have this service.

Formally, there is a "Volunteer Chaplain" application form to be completed, and an "interiew" to go through. Once accepted, we would hope your supporting place of worship would commission you as a Chaplain and continue to support you throughout your period of Chaplaincy - we also have our own Commissioning service.

After this is a period of on-the-job training. Currently KWM has guiding policies and an Introduction to Chaplaincy training course to help you feel confident, and to help you understand some of the theologies of Chaplaincy.

Kent Workplace Mission would be a constant support to you. There are periodic Field Team meetings for support and training, online support forums and discussion groups and a log-in area on this website where you can access policy documents, forms, dates etc. KWM help set up contracts with businesses, also provide insurances and DBS checks, an email address etc and guidelines to ensure your safety at all times. Chaplains derive great satisfaction from giving care to others, but it is equally important to us to give care to you and ensure that your spiritual and physical needs are met, to enable you to look after others to the best of your ability.

Please arrange to meet for coffee and a chat with a member of the team if you are at all interested in Chaplaincy so we can answer your questions. Contact details are below and on the Contact Us page.
