A Time for Hygge?

Have you heard of hygge?

Pronounced "hooga", it is a concept used in Nordic and Scandinavian countries. It can be translated as “cosiness”, but its meaning embraces a lot more.

In Britain, we tend to soldier on, through the coldest and darkest months, expecting to carry on with our busy schedules and power through the urge to hibernate. In January, the celebration and sparkle of Christmas has been packed up into the loft and this time of year can seem infinite and cheerless, even for Christians. The Nordics and Scandinavians don’t try to battle stoically on, they embrace this time and find rest and peace. They may light candles, read books, wrap up warm and spend time with family and friends. Rest is important, and this kind of self-care can include taking time at the start of a new year to listen to God, to relate to our neighbours and re-centre our priorities.

After the preparation and busyness of Christmas, take a little time to ease off the pressure, to stay in, light those candles, eat that chocolate, read that book.

Our Christ the Worker theme this year is based around Sabbath and rest and this is a good place to start. Jesus promised “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
